Becoming a remarkable boss isn’t as difficult as you may think…

1. Choosing the right people, and encouraging their strengths and creativity

While a good boss will populate a team with people who sound fantastic on paper a remarkable boss will surround him, or her, self with the “will doers”, rather than the “could doers”. It isn’t enough to scan a person’s CV anymore, you must be prepared to hear what they could do for your company, and give them a chance to prove it. Got your team sorted? Now it’s time to encourage each person’s strengths and creativity. A remarkable boss will always know how to bring the very best out of their team, and be there every step of the way as they flourish in their role.

2. Creating the right atmosphere

A remarkable boss is good at motivating their team, creating a comfortable working environment, and generating a certain atmosphere. Is your team happy to come to work each day? Have you managed to achieve an office environment that is open to change, up for the challenge, yet able to relax when the time is right? If so, you’re a remarkable boss. You see, it isn’t just about making sure that people turn up to work and do their job, but to ensure that they’re comfortable, motivated, honest, and loyal – to bring out the best in your team, and to keep them focused.

3. Communication and praise

Anybody can bark orders and tell somebody they’re doing a good job in an attempt to motivate them, but a remarkable boss will know when praise is appropriate, and when it may be time to be more tactful. Communication is key; be clear and concise so that your team always knows what to expect from you, and take the time to make your staff feel valued in their own fields. A happy staff is a more productive team. By all means use internal messenger, emails, and phone calls to speak to your team, but remember that face-to-face contact is the most valuable; be available, and you’ll be remarkable.

4. Keeping the balance

So, in order to be a remarkable boss you’ll need to be approachable, but an identifiable leader, you should remain firm, but fair, and you’ll be expected to criticise and praise in equal measure…Not too much to ask, then! Transparency is absolutely vital in a leader, and your staff must need to know where they stand with you at all times. Try to be friendly, yet respected, a talker, but a listener, and a stickler for the rules, but to know when it’s appropriate to bend them – now, that’s a remarkable boss.

5. Take ideas, and criticism, on board

To be a remarkable boss you don’t have to be right all of the time, but accept when you’re wrong and move on. A fantastic boss has humility, the ability to take criticism, and openness to ideas; this isn’t a one-man, or woman, show, after all. To take your leadership to the next level it’s always a great idea to start your mornings with feedback sessions, and to hold regular Q and A interviews on a one-to-one basis; it’s the best way to improve your position and keep your team on side.

Okay, so being a good boss, let alone a remarkable one, will often take so much more than is listed in this blog post, but they’re a great few pointers to begin with; practice what you preach, be prepared to communicate on a range of levels, and never be afraid to bring out the best in those around you – in fact, actively encourage creativity, discussion, and feedback, and you won’t go wrong. Most importantly, being a remarkable boss is about so much more than telling people what to do. It’s about leading.

Remember these steps and you’re halfway there.
